AI changed what I can build

I really like how you set up your gig for your private little Midjourney. Use cases are the most important in all technology. I think about the blockchain craze. At the end of it, only the true use cases survive. The trend chasers and shallow perceptions eventually get left on the wayside. I think about the metaverse. Same thing.

Yeah I've built a ton of stuff like that for my friend group since then. We have our own little private forum and my other project Mulligan Labs which we built just to play our weekly Commander games when we're not in the same state.

Everyone jokes about vibe coders having more apps than users, but I actually think thats so cool - to me that just means more people get to experience the joy of building.

There is a very interesting divide in how people use AI to create things. The prevailing narrative focuses on a (large, to be fair) group of people who essentially use AI as a megaphone for their lack of care. It can be used by people as a megaphone to amplify the existence of care as well though. If you care deeply about making something, such as a tool to solve a problem or to make people happy, you can do really great things that people will appreciate. If you simply pipeline prompts from your head, to AI, to other people, without iterating on the output of the AI, you will annoy people with how loudly you don't care. That's slop, no matter how good AI gets.

I agree. Most of the time, the loud use cases are about coolness, humor and something crass. While I feel that AI at the end of it all is an ugly hack that needs more than just a bit of refining, the possible life-changing use cases are worth persevering for.

I think the ability for AI to code is one of the most powerful things when harnessed by domain experts to actually get work done. I truly believe that is a big part of what is going to (ideally) unlock the rapid advancement of tech that actually matters (cure cancer, etc.)

Totally. I also think to many people "AI" is just one monolith. The annoying xfinity customer support bot is the same thing as claude code (not even to mention non-LLMs).

The people I see succeeding a lot with AI right now are the ones who are just technical enough to be dangerous but lack the rigidity of long term software engineers who are used to writing code by hand. In my customer support world those folks are generally awesome at debugging and QA tasks which are the most important parts of making your AI-coded thing not slop.
