GM to Offer Apple CarPlay After Shift Away from the System

I wondered if/when this would happen. I would have considered their vehicles more seriously had they not done this. To be fair, I do know some people say it wasn't a dealbreaker for them because you could still connect the phone over bluetooth, take phone calls, play music, and even send text messages with Siri.

Seems like the biggest loss is the integrated navigation, which would be important for me.

I have used Carplay in several rentals and it is infuriating for navigation. Once you have a goog maps route on there, it only shows a text "cuesheet" list on the phone and you basically can only interact with the map on the carplay screen. The carplay screen is terrible at zoom in/out and panning so you can sus out the route in realtime, it also sucks hard for searching for things like gas stations along the route. As the navigator riding shotgun, I can do fuckall with the maps on the phone as I just have a useless cuesheet text display of turns. Invariably, the goog decides to change my chosen oceanside route to the quicker way automatically. Like so many other obvious missteps it all speaks to these multi trillion $ companies failing to hire UX/UI resources.

I have been thinking that I'd just mount an iPad over the dumb screen, but so many automakers put things like climate control on there. In the end, I am stuck with older cars with CD players that I can stick a phone mount that actually works into...
